Powerful, Solid Laptop
By Christopher M. Alexander
I purchased this laptop to replace a HP HDX18. It was a good laptop, but I had numerous issues with it from the start (for some reason HP has a real problem with optical drives failing). Finally, the video card (or possibly the screen--I never verified) died, so I went about looking for a solid replacement. While the ASUS RoG line is pricey, there is an undeniable quality of construction that just wasn't there with my prior HP laptops. It just feels solid, tight, not loose and rickety like so many other brands. The specs speak for themselves. I'm not a big gamer, but I do 3D modeling and rendering as a hobby, and this thing handles rendering almost as well as my desktop computer. The 12GB of RAM really helps to keep everything running smoothly, no matter how many programs I have open or Chrome tabs running simultaneously.I did do a personal upgrade from the standard operating system hard drive to a 128GB solid state drive (SSD). The speed difference is astounding! If you're not comfortable with changing out hard drives and re-installing Windows and drivers, then just make the upgrade here at the point of purchase; otherwise, it's not difficult. Either way, you'll be VERY glad you made the leap to SSD!The mouse pad is a multitouch pad. There is no scroll section off to the side like in my HP laptops. Scrolling is achieved by dragging two fingers simultaneously down the touchpad. Zooming in and out is achieved just how it is done on iPhones and Androids, by squeezing fingers together on the pad or by spreading them out. Three fingers dragged down is "Show Desktop", etc. There aren't a lot of multitouch commands, but the ones that are there are pretty handy.I only have two complaints so far:1) the speakers are inordinately quiet. My HP could get pretty loud. This thing? Not so much. It's probably OK for most people, but I have three small kids and my wife is always running some kitchen appliance, so I need my laptop to be able to overcome a lot of background noise. As is, this one's capabilities are barely adequate.2) a minor complaint, but still a tad annoying--I can't find where to change the abilities of some of the function keys. For example, "fn+Enter" (on the keypad) brings up the calculator. I want to change this to bring up not the Microsoft basic calculator, but GraphCalc 4.0.1 that I use far more often. So far, I have been unable to find this functionality.Overall this is a fantastic piece of equipment. It's solid, feels rugged (though I hope to never test that), and is very powerful. If I wasn't addicted to my dual-monitor beast of a desktop computer, this laptop could certainly function as a good desktop replacement.

Got what I expected
By D. Hill
This is a 30-day user review. I purchased the same Amazon product from J&R directly after looking at my pricing options, but Amazon is always competitive great. I'll state upfront I'm satisfied with everything so far. I've read some mixed reviews and understand everyone has a different experience. With that said, I'll go into detail.1. As a laptop that's really a desktop replacement for a casual gamer, that category means, its more luggable than portable. It comes with a nice ROG branded back pack, so you'll look cool lugging it around, if needed. Don't complain about short battery life or heavy power supply since that was a trade made when you wanted a gaming laptop. I'll agree there may be lighter options. The build quality won't get you a lightweight.2. As a gaming platform, you may want to buy a gaming keyboard. I did, and while there is nothing wrong with the keyboard, you may want to adjust the screen location to be higher than your arms can rest comfortably. Also you can customize keys beyond what the ASUS software natively supports. The USB ROG Gaming mouse that comes with it is really superb.3. Despite the awesome processor and graphics, the Windows Experience is low (under 6 on a scale of 8) because of the speed of this laptops SATA III 7200-rpm drives make the test scores fall below 7. Be advised, the 2 identical 750GB drives are not slow. If you want you can "customize the RAID configuration in BIOS and give-up capacity (1.5TB) by using a STRIPED RAID configuration. You'll also give up the restore partition, which to me is an awesome feature in case of disaster. As a casual gamer, an alternative would be to add a SSD Hybrid drive (I did) and it's not a noticeable problem with boot time or OS access. All of the USB ports are 3.0 capable.4. The OS is Windows 7 x64 Home Premium. While I used an anytime upgrade to Win 7 Ultimate, and I like it that way, others may clamor for Windows 8. I'm run Windows 8 in a VM ware 5 product and this machine excels at running a virtual machine. There is a Native Win 8 version that would be a better option if that is your preference. This laptop is upgradable to Windows 8.5. The built-in media and visualization capabilities are stunning. Blu-ray disc and HD media playback work great. Paired externally with a 3D 1080P 23-in IPS display, that is really awesome. Add an external TV tuner and popcorn, then you are set for a home theater on your desktop. A mini display port and VGA port improve video connection options. There is a fix for the sound drivers that is very simple and straight forward with products that ASUS supports. If it's not good enough, you can also get a good set of external speakers or gaming headphones. It was not a big problem for me, just a preference to relocate the sound. They do make the ASUS N76 series machines with a B&O external sub-woofer and that would not really be for gaming, just sound during media playback.6. ASUS support is really one of the best in the business. 30-day 0 defect LCD, 2 yr warranty with depot and free shipping, free ADP insurance protect, I have worked with them to resolve problems and they are very helpful.7. Access to the ROG Portal and User forums for anyone who buys the product is a great perk.In closing, a little research and adjustment brings out the quality of the laptop. My out of the box experience was great. The tweaks and upgrades make it better. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend or buy again,

ASUS Review

This is an outstanding gamer and the best lap top I have ever owned. The price is affordable given all the programs that come installed. The sound and graphics just knock your socks off. Highly recommended!
